NIREC COMMUNIQUE

COMMUNIQUE DELIVERED AT THE END OF THE 4TH QUARTER COUNCIL MEETING OF THE NIGERIA INTERRELIGIOUS COUNCIL (NIREC) HELD AT THE SHERATON HOTEL ABUJA ON 20TH – 21ST  NOVEMBER 2018.

APREAMBLE

The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) under the esteemed Co-Chairmanship of their Eminences the Sultan of Sokoto who is also the President -General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR,mni, and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Dr Samson Olasupo A. Ayokunle, held its last quarterly meeting at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja from 20th – 21st November, 2018.

BAPPRECIATION

1.The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council acknowledges theimmense support and contribution of the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR for ensuring the facilitation and sustenance of the Council. The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is also appreciated.

2.The Council appreciates the assurances of the Federal Government and the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) that free, fair and credible elections will be conducted in 2019 and urges the Government to ensure that all political parties and other stakeholders are carried along to ensure credible general elections in 2019

CRESOLUTIONS 

The NIREC after careful consideration and deliberation on the State of the nation, the 2019 General Elections and other issues resolved that:

 

1. The police and other security agencies should display high level of professionalism in managing the challenges of the forthcoming general election.
2. The Government should mop up illegal arms and ammunitions in the country and increase intelligence gathering to curb crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery and vandalisation of public and private facilities.
3. The government at all levels should increase job opportunities for the teeming unemployed Nigerians by resuscitating moribund companies, increasingAgricultural facilities and electricity supply as well as ensuring accessibility to funds for small and medium scale industries to reduce poverty
4. Families should devote quality time to raising their children in godly manner by inculcating positive valuesin them so as to discourage cultism and drug abuse particularly among the youth.
5. Nigerians should desist from spreading fake news, hate speeches and other negative information that can disruptthe relative peace of the nation.
6. Government at all levels should implement white papers on the investigations of the various attacks in parts of the country towards ensuring justice to both victims and suspects.
7. Government should intensify efforts in securing the release of Miss Leah Sharibu alongside other Chibok girls in Boko Haram’s captivity. Government should identify and diligently prosecute the murderers of General Alkali and other gang killings to serve as a deterrent to others.
8. Government should establish State Police and Community policing to ensure security of lives and property.
9. Government should positively consider the payment of the minimum wage of N30,000.00 to workers in order to promote peace and industrial harmony.
10. Government and the striking ASUU should find an amicable solution to the reoccurring dispute and put an end to the disruption of the University calendar
11. Government should as a matter of urgency increase amenities for the physically challenged individuals
12. Government should upgrade and provide more basichealth facilities in the country
13. A group of experts have been required to examine theconcerns about the safety and security of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) currently being introduced into the nation’s agricultural and biotechnologicalspheres
14. The Council endorsed the appointment of Fr. Prof. Cornelius Afebu Omonokhua as Executive Secretary of NIREC
15. The Council commiserates with CAN and the family of the late General Secretary of CAN, Rev. Dr Musa Asake,respected member of the Council.
16. All religious leaders should serve as peace advocates and avoid preaching inflammatory and provocativemessages.
17. Nigerians should promote peaceful coexistence by words and actions and consider one another as partners in nation building.
